As we are finishing The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, I will ask that each of you post an "I Wonder" statement and respond to at least two of your classmates posts. Remember that I am always looking for your insight into not only the book, but also to your classmates posts.
ASSIGNMENT DUE WEDNESDAY, APRIL 7 -- 10 pts.
Read one of the poems at the link below (Holocaust Poetry). Then, with a few sentences for each, answer the following questions:
1. Write the title of the poem you are responding to, and in relation to the entire poem, why you feel the author chose this title (remember to look for connotations and deeper meaning to help you discover your answer.)
2. Briefly summarize the action of the poem (simply what “happens” in it—surface meaning).
3. Describe the tone of the poem. What adjectives does the author use to create this tone? Think about the connotations of various words in the poem. What emotions do they evoke? What kind of atmosphere do they create?
4. What message do you think the author is trying to convey with his or her poem? What is the deeper meaning behind it—the theme? Explain.
Post your responses in a new topic in your respective period. Make the topic the title of the poem you are responding to.
Please write at least a half-page response (12 point, Times New Roman, 1-inch margins in Word or other word processor) to the Interactive Birkenau Map (link below as "Concentration Camp").
Using the information and photographs within, write a passage summarizing your thoughts on one of the following topics: the entrance to Birkenau, the men’s barracks, the women’s barracks, the execution field, or the crematoriums. Include information from the website. Then, write about the atmosphere of Birkenau, based on the emotional response that you get from the photographs. What kind of mental effect would the environment of Birkenau have on a person imprisoned there? What sights do you see that would create these emotions in this person? How does viewing the concentration camp help you understand Night better? Make connections with events or passages in Night.
To receive full credit, make sure that your response is thoughtful and shows evidence that you have viewed and understood the website and have made connections to what we have covered in Night.
